Detailed description of Peacock Gap Country Club

Peacock Gap Country Club is a Semi-Private 18 hole golf course located in San Rafael, California.

The course opened for play in 1961. The course was designed by William Bell and was later renovated by Forrest Richardson.

Peacock Gap Golf Club extends along the shores of San Pablo Bay, but it sits inland enough to avoid the fogginess of the coast and enjoy consistently sunny weather throughout the year. The course's layout has undergone many renovations over the years that have brought it to its current playability. The golf course kept the classic features of its original layout, such as the inviting fairways that still provide a challenge and the tricky greens that deceptively extend past where the player thinks they end. The Peacock Gap Golf Course is predominantly flat with water on 12 holes and a creek running through the layout.

In addition to the course, Peacock Gap has also improved their practice facilities over the years. There is an all-grass driving range, two large practice greens, and a chipping green.

Par for the course is 71. From the back tees, the course plays to 6354 yards. From the forward tees, the course measures 5629 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 12, a par-5 that plays to 543 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 10, a par-3 that plays to 137 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 5, a 426-yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole at Peacock Gap is # 10, the 137 yard par-3.

I play Peacock Gap a lot and like it. It is very walkable. It is also a good layout and the course, particularly the greens, are in great shape. Plus the $31 mid week senior walking rate is a bargain and it has grass hitting area and other practice areas. Cons - pace of play the last 6 months has been horrible. The marshals need to step up and move the offending groups along. Peacock has a horrible philosophy of timing the groups and then they say the slow group is on pace for a 4.5 hour round. But first they are wrong and second the only thing that makes sense is for every group to keep up with the group in front of them not have 2-3 holes open. Smaller issue is that the price of practice balls is exorbitant - $9 for a small bucket of 30 balls - way above even high Bay Area prices. They get away with it as the practice area is great with grass and they have no competition but it is still way too high.

Bottom line: I would play again, Bargain priced based on quality and competitive area pricing

I will give this place another chance. Unfortunately this was my first time playing this course. The starter was letting people tee off as soon as they could instead of adhering to the schedule. This caused immediate bunching up. It took us 2:40 minutes to play the first nine. After the turn it took us 1 hour to play 3 holes. We asked the marshall a number of times to make groups ahead of move back in to position. The marshall only spoke to the groups and never made the groups move back in position. We gave up and left the course after the 13th hole. We were not willing to play a 6 hour round. If they do not improve their management of pace of play this course will lose patrons including me

New restaurant and grass driving range are very outstanding for a public course. Two large putting greens and chipping with sand traps are very well done. Only trouble is the course, especially the greens. Much improved over the previous renovations which combined with overpricing the memberships and alienating all their regulars was a disaster for everyone especially the owners. Hopefully, new owners will improve the course and greens and the golf can match the other amenities. Great place to practice and tune your game.

the greens are the biggest con on this course. The mowers leave ridges and shave off areas of the greens due to the severe shape of the surface. I felt the greens are too large as well, leading to puts of over 100ft or more and sometimes with an elevation change of 5 to 8 feet. If you are a visitor to this course and are not familiar with the greens and can't see the pin because of the mounds protecting the greens you will be likely looking at a lot of three putts. the fairway layout is a great improvement over the old course and adds more challenges with bunker placement so choose your tee shots carefully. Overall this course adds a nice option for north bay golfers with competitive pricing and is easy to walk for us older folks

Recent renovation really helped by eliminating most of the Micky Mouse greens. The layout change of a few years ago is good and now the course moves along well, is in good condition and a good value. And the grass driving rane is a plus.

The staff was very helpful in getting me out as a single. The greens had been sanded are were slow as a result. The 16th hole is a nice par 3. Most of the rest of this course is not memorable. Driving range and short game practice area are fantastic.

The greens are more like a mini golf/putt putt format. Unrealistic, deep depressions and large mounds make up most greens. Almost unputtable.
